MTV Video Music Awards 2011

The MTV VMA's were fun to watch, if only for the crazy hairstyles and fashion! We weeded through the crazy and found a handful of celebrities who's hair looked lovely, wearable and great trends for fall.
Glammed up side ponytails
Sweep your second-day curls into a side ponytail. Pull a few pieces out around your face and you're good to go!
Volume
We swooned when we saw Adele and her 60's inspired 'do. So lovely.
Dark and Shiny
Dark hair was all the rage. Whether wavy (Katie Holmes) or straight (Kim Kardashian) make sure you're hair shines! Use Bb. Shine Shampoo, Conditioner and Spray to create these looks.
Rainbow Brite Color
Celeb's have been rocking the rainbow color trend for a couple weeks ago. Katy Perry made things fun on the red carpet. If you're leery (like we are) about a full head of color try a few colored extension pieces.

hair how-to: faux bob

We all love long hair but sometimes it's fun to change things up. We created this hair tutorial for those of you with long hair that want to try short hair but without the commitment. Hence the faux bob. Take your hair from this:

To this:
(in a few easy steps.)

1} We started with curly (second-day) hair. It gave the faux bob more of a fun, messy, texture but you can definitely start with straight hair as well.
2} Spray hair all over with Spray de Mode hairspray. This will give the hair more hold and grip.
3} Starting in the back of the head, working in sections roll the hair under and up. Pin underneath with pins. Continue doing this all around the head until all your hair is pinned up.
4} Pull a few pieces of hair out around your face (if you have layers). Spray again with Spray de Mode.
.....and Voila! You have a fun, faux bob for the day! We would love to hear how this tutorial (or any others we've posted) has worked for you and would love to see pictures, please email them to us at salon.k@hotmail.com

hair how-to: classic bun

When it's too hot outside to even look at a blow drier we love being able to throw our hair up but still look chic and pulled together. We loved this high bun on Cassie Scerbo at the Teen Choice Awards. This style will add a few inches to your frame and will show off your face perfectly.

1} We've said it before but when you are pulling your hair up it's better to do it on dirty hair. It will hold better and last longer. If you're starting on dirty hair skip to step #2. If you're starting on clean hair spray Thickening Hairspray all over then blow dry hair completely.
2} Pull hair into a high ponytail (on your crown) and secure with a hairband. Rat your ponytail then twist the hair around itself to form a bun shape. Secure it with bobby pins.
3} Use your hands to smooth the hair into place and finish with Classic Hairspray. A great option for when you're in a hurry or need a cute looking 'do on the fly!

Selena Gomez always has shiny and healthy looking hair. We loved her shimmering, wavy strands she had at the Teen Choice Awards.
1} Spray Thickening Hairspray all over wet hair then rub Styling Creme on roots.
2} Blow dry hair completely smooth with a brush.
3} Spritz hair with Does it All styling to protect hair from heat.
4} Separate hair into small sections and use a medium to large barrel curling iron to set loose waves.
5} Spray hair all over with Spray de Mode hairspray. Tuck the hair behind one ear to give it an all-over polished look

Thickening Trio

Don't you hate it when you buy a full size hair product and you end up not liking it? You don't want to throw it away so you throw it under your sink and let it collect dust. Bumble and bumble gives us yet ANOTHER reason to love them by providing 2oz sizes of their products. It's a great way to try a product out without spending a lot of money. We love this Thickening trio with Thickening Shampoo, Thickening Conditioner and Thickening Hairspray (a best selling family) and the stylish reusable travel bag they come in!

Teen Choice Awards 2011

Last weekend were the Teen Choice Awards. We loved seeing all the celebrities no fuss ponytails and beachy waves. The Kardashian's always look lovely. Khloe's long, wavy, lightened locks look glamorous and summery. Kim and Kourtney's sleek bun and ponytail are a great option for summer, they look pulled together without all the fuss (especially on these hot summer days when the last thing you want to do is touch a blow drier!). Kylie's wavy, dark strands are cute and fun, but we hate Kendall's wierd pulled back braid.

We love that Emma Stone went back to her red hair color, her pulled back beachy waves are fun.

Wavy hair was a big trend of the evening. It's fun to see how versatile they are, for example, Ashley Benson kept her waves more soft and casual with a beach vibe while Lucy Hale chose more polished and sleek. Click here for a hair how-to to get waves similar to Lucy Hale's.

Rachel Bilson looked cute and summery (yes MORE wavy hair! Time to stock up on Surf Spray!). Click here, here, or here for some wavy hair how-to's.

Last but not least we love Zoe Saldana's shiny, shorter strands.

hair how-to: Deconstruced Updo

We instantly fell in love when we saw Taylor Swift's Deconstructed Updo. By following these easy steps you’ll be able to create totally modern, slightly deconstructed updo in less than 15 minutes that will last.
1} Pulling hair up always works best on dirty or second day hair. If you're working on dirty hair skip to step #4.
2} On clean hair work Styling Creme through roots of hair and spray Thickening Hairspray all over hair.
3} Use a Round Brush and start drying hair in sections. When you pull the brush out of each section of hair, spin the brush as you pull away from the head to create a spiral formation.
4} After hair is completely dry, spray the entire head with Spray de Mode hairspray. Taking a curling iron wrap large sections of hair around the barrel moving away from the head. Keep sections flat so they look like ribbons around the rod. Repeat this process throughout the entire head.
5} Spray the sections again with Spray de Mode. Run fingers through hair to create a loose, tousled effect.
6} Pull all the hair back loosely and gather at the nape. Using bobby pins secure the hair at the nape. Layer the curls on top of one another, pin and repeat.
7} Finish with Spray de Mode Hairspray.

hair how-to: Jennifer Aniston

We are always envious of Jennifer's modern, sleek and straight strands! Here's a how-to so you can get her same look at home!
1} Start with clean, damp hair.
2} Spray hair all over with Prep. Spray roots and ends with Bb. Thickening Hairspray and apply a dime size amount of Grooming Creme on the ends.
3} Blow dry hair. Over-direct your hair in the opposite way it grows as you blow dry to get volume.
4} Taking 1-2 inch sections, start at the base of your neck and wrap hair around a large boar bristle brush (we love Spornette's #855) and blow dry. Follow with a shot of cool air from the blow drier to set the curl. Continue this method throughout your whole head.
*If you have multiple brushes you can use them all at the same time and leave the brushes in your hair letting them set for more hold and volume.
5} When you get to the top, pull the hair forward towards the forehead and do the same "brush set" as above.
6} Spray hair with Spray de Mode hairspray to set. Comb through hair with fingers.
And there you have it! If you try out one of our hair how-to's we would love to hear how it went!

Nozzle

photo via: Kristen Ess + thebeautydepartment.com

Every time we used to buy a new blowdrier we would immediately throw away the nozzle and any of the other accessories we didn't know what to do with. Now that we know the importance of a nozzle (thanks to thebeautydepartment.com for the reminder) we want to pass it on! A blow dryer nozzle has a couple important benefits; Putting the end of a blow drier directly on your hair can burn the hair strand and can be quite damaging, adding the nozzle will help prevent this issue. A nozzle also helps direct the airflow more precisely and will help direct your cuticle downward which will make your hair look and feel smooth and shiny!
